Firmstone further explores the visual tension between non-reflective and reflective materials or to put it more succinctly, stasis and fluidity. Linen, canvas, and paper – are pitted against the reflective properties of inlaid anodised aluminium.
The ever-shifting reflections inherent to this material function to disrupt the viewer's perception. Further amplifying this effect is the carefully orchestrated interplay of colour.

What makes the work significant is precisely how Firmstone incorporates the natural element of light to pulsating effect. Ghost Colours Pink and Grey is smaller in scale and holds similar aesthetic qualities. Firmstone’s slight alteration in detail reconstitutes the anodised aluminium to the forefront articulates another dimension. Almost like a readymade manifestation is taking place. When viewing from an angle the light shifts the perspective and the comfort these objects give is illusory. The light alters the anodised aluminium u-channel enabling the dark and light shadow to play on the objects surface. The shift eludes the mind to perceive the aluminium channel as solid mass - creating an effect, which makes it appear two- dimensional in flatness and integrated into the painting surface.
Again, Ghost Colours Yellow/Green affirms Firmstone’s ability to enhance the optical elements and compositional variations. It absolutely offsets and compliments the other three paintings. They together counterbalance the gallery architectural lines while in turn accompany the seamless aesthetic pleasure Firmstone portrays.
Ghost Colours Blue/Purple is overwhelmingly remarkable in size and appearance. Whether it is intentional the painting appears as a compositional conundrum for the viewer. The scale and materiality retains its seamless tonality from light to dark composed by the ascending colourfield from blues to purple matte vanished watercolour in paper fibre on the horizontal plane. The vertical plane is juxtaposed by an intriguing choice of material anodised aluminium. The smoothness of the hard- edged anodised aluminium u-channel in contrast to the subtle lightness of colour and texture is of an exceptional quality. The painting is a clear and concise indication Firmstone holds an air of sophistication and confidence at mid career.
